Vehicle insurance coverage basics, although not necessarily a popular subject, is nonetheless important. A fact not widely known, mainly due to the belief that it doesn't matter, is that there are a number of types of automobile insurance coverage. More importantly, just because you have insurance, you are not necessarily covered for every incident.

What Does Auto Insurance Cost You?
Thanks to the fact that the road if full of drivers that should never have been allowed a license in the first place, signing up for the minimum amount of insurance sort of defeats the purpose of being insured to begin with.

If you do not have even the barest minimum of auto insurance, you leave yourself unprotected and, may well be up for all cost of injuries from other parties.

It is not your driving record, nor your skills that determine auto accidents. Indeed, it's all those other knuckle heads out there. Point in case, there are far too many people in the cemetery who don't get into accidents.

Merely buying auto insurance to cover yourself legally, may ultimately cost you a lot more. You may think that you are now protected in any accident. However, it might be, that you are not covered as well as you had thought.

Your motor vehicle insurance policy should in fact be the best that you can easily afford. The basic legal requirement at best, covers only the minimum of car insurance liabilities.

If you clip another car, or visa-versa, are you covered? Keep in mind that depending on where you live, insurance coverage may differ.

Categories of Vehicle Insurance Coverage Basics
What follows are different types of motor insurance cover.

No-fault Law.
Provided you have the minimum legal coverage, if it is your fault or not, you are covered. Your chosen insurer will cover your personal injury medical bills for an amount previously decided upon by them.

Bodily Injury Liability.
Bodily Injury Liability comes into play when there is injury or a death to any persons, inside or outside of a vehicle, with a vehicle you are the owner of. Apart from hospital and medical costs, rehabilitation, long term care, including but not limited to loss of income, are also covered.

Property Damage Liability.
This will cover any damages to someone else's property, by your vehicle. This can include their car, fences, any part of a house, all forms of other vehicles, etc. The limits of recompense for this are determined by your insurance company. Depending on your country, property damage liability and bodily injury liability are usually combined.

Full Coverage.
This is a comprehensive auto insurance, where you are covered for practically all contingencies.

Medical Only.
This will protect you only in the case of medical costs.

Uninsured Motorist.
The passengers in your car, including yourself, are protected when the driver of another vehicle involved in an incident with your vehicle, doesn't have the legally required minimum of insurance.

If you can comfortably spare the expense of full, comprehensive, auto insurance coverage, then do so. If your insurance cover is pre-determined by how much your finances can bear, then so be it, there is no shame here.

You need to get the coverage that suits your situation. If you get less than you easily have enough for, in the event of an incident you may find you have ultimately left yourself in the lurch.

Even as car insurance liability is a bit of a grey area for most people, it will pay in the long run to know just what the types of automobile insurance coverage entail. Be safe, get informed.
